Forty years of protest and cultural evolution have resulted in many changes for the better to Australia. The first Mardi Gras on the streets of Sydney in 1978 started out peacefully but ended in utter pointless violence by the authorities. Many of those same '78ers are now the bedrock of our community and honoured for their courage. The annual festival, parade and party are a celebration of community, courage, visibility and an embracing spirit.
